Chris Waddell - One Revolution
About Chris - Chris Waddell was a promising young skier at Middlebury College in 1988 when a skiing accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Determined to get back on the slopes, he began skiing on a monoski roughly one year later. A little more than two years later, Waddell was named to the US Disabled Ski Team. Waddell went on to become the most decorated male skier in Paralympic history, winning twelve medals over four games, and spending a total of 11 years on the US Disabled Ski Team.
In addition to his work with the Paralympics and the International Paralympic Committee, Waddell has found success as a motivational speaker Waddell speaks to the resilience of the human condition, with topics ranging from leadership to adversity to quality of life. Waddell has been featured in numerous publications, including Outside Magazine, Skiing, Ski, National Geographic Explorer, and People Magazine who named him one of “The 50 Most Beautiful People in the World.” He has also appeared on Dateline and Oprah.
Waddell has dedicated his life to defying the conventional wisdom of what a paraplegic can and cannot do. Through his work with the Paralympics, Waddell has proven that being a "para" doesn't mean living a disabled life. Waddell's athletic abilities garnered international attention and have helped to change the way disabled individuals are viewed.
The Climb - After training for two years and with an expert team, which comprised of his doctor, trainer, guides, a camera crew and others who have helped him with his cause, Chris has become the first paraplegic to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa’s highest mountain, on his own power.

By using his arms, he wheeled himself up the steep and rocky terrain in a special four-wheeled cycle called a Bomba , a highly engineered four wheel mountain bike.
The vehicle is driven entirely by Waddell’s arms and is capable of taking on foot-high boulders. The unique handcycle steers 2 ways, via traditional hand bars and through a special pedal that sits under the chest. The One-Off has impressive traction and control with wheels capable of maneuvering over 4 foot-tall obstacles.
“The climb is only part of this incredible journey,” says Waddell. “We want to help disabled people around the world be seen for who they are and what can be achieved.”
In addition to Waddell’s achievement, a former African porter, Tajiri, who had lost his leg in a rock slide, trekked up Kili with the group, thanks to a $3000 prosthetic leg donated by Waddell’s organization One-Revolution and the Northstar Foundation. He summitted as well and now holds the title of the first amputee to reach Uhuru Peak! Happy for his new friend, Waddell declared, “I suspect that Tajiri might get a chance to do far more than he would have in his previous life.” In addition to helping Tajiri, One-Revolution will be donating custom wheelchairs and handcycles to disabled people in Tanzania

One Revolution is Waddell's motto for this expedition and his life. "One revolution means so many things to me. One revolution of the handcycle, one revolution of the earth, one lifetime, one moment, one chance to make a difference."
Mobility represents independence and integration-something denied to the disabled in Tanzania. The One-Revolution Foundation is designing and producing a "Developing Countries Handcycle."
The intention is to create opportunity through mobility. During the 2009 climb, One-Revolution will donate wheelchairs and handcycles to Tanzanians in need. Going forward, the foundation will make bi-annual handcycle donations throughout the world.
The Developing Countries Handcycle will give the recipient not only transportation, but the opportunity to participate in commerce in their own community. The handcycle technology will be shared with each community. One-Revolution will partner with a local manufacturer to make additional handcycles.
