Cougar - Manual and Powered Hand Cycle       £2,350

Introduction

The Cougar has a 7 speed Freewheel mounted on to the side of the motor. It can be operated with or without power assistance. It is possible to instantly switch from manual to power assist without interruption of cycle rotation.

Power assistance can be used continuously although in order to conserve battery power it is good practice to anticipate gear changes when approaching an incline and to use assistance when extra power is needed.

The power assistance is not aimed solely at those with limited arm and hand power, just the opposite in fact. The Heinzmann hub was developed for the bicycle world and has enjoyed huge success across Europe and the USA.

The secret lies in the sophisticated electronics and gearing mechanisms inside the hub. The best way to describe its performance is it’s likeness to a kick down in an automatic car. Whatever gear you are in, switching over to power assist boosts rider input instantaneously, powering you to the next gear with as little or as much effort as you choose.

The Cougar was designed and built to make life easier and more pleasant for hand cyclists. No matter whether you encounter headwinds, rain or hills, with the Cougar as your backup you will always have the upper hand giving you that boost when ever you need it. Its user-friendliness and superior help function make it the No.1 hand cycle on the market.

Range

The Cougar allows a range of action approx 10 miles on power alone. This means increased mobility with little effort. The range achieved by a single battery charge depends on various factors. These the condition of the battery, the road conditions and particularly the cyclist's own effort. A 7-gear free wheel is integrated into the system. You shift gears by turning the right twist-grip on the handlebars through positions 1 to 7.

Powered Hub

The Cougar is powered by the Heinzmann™ electronic hub which is renowned for its reliability and ruggedness.

All Heinzmann motors are built to the same basic plan. The motor is spoked directly into the rim, and can be fitted to any size from 16” to 28”. The motor is 36V, 200W, 43Nm

Pack and Controller
Heinzmann Power Pack

The Heinzmann Power Pack contains:

  • NiCad batteries
  • battery monitor
  • electronic controller
  • 30 D-size genuine Sanyo Cadnica nickel-cadmium cells

Battery Meter

The Heinzmann battery meter is very sophisticated. It achieves a high level of accuracy by measuring the ampage throughput of the pack and compensates for temperature.

Controller

A pulse-width controller, controlled by the throttle on the handlebar. The throttle has an on/off switch and light, and there's a key switch on the Power Pack.

The controller also has safety features to protect you and other parts of the system: it monitors the temperature of the motor at all times, and it monitors every cell in the pack - if anything goes wrong (very rare!) it cuts out to protect you and everything else.

Cables and Connectors

To stand up to years of use in all weathers, we only use the toughest cables and connectors available.

Charger

Designed to work closely with the Power Pack, it is a microprocessor-controlled "smart" charger which monitors the pack's temperature, current and voltage to charge the pack in two hours.

Because it is a switched-mode charger, it doesn't't have a heavy transformer and is easier to carry with you.

Docking System

The Cougar cycle can be connected to most rigid wheelchairs via a docking system that is permanently mounted under the wheelchair. It is lightweight, and adds approximately one kilogram to the weight of the chair. Once connected it takes only seconds to dock on.

The rear of the docking system is bolted to either the back axle or a bar going across the back of the chair. The front is bolted to the bar underneath the front of the seat. Some chairs do not have this bar, Kuschall for example. In this case we tailor a bar to the chair, which is then bolted on using the existing holes.

Cougar safety

The Cougar provides comprehensive safety features against possible technical malfunctions of the controls, or on attaining critical operating states, or as a response to a specific behavior. These include the following features:

  1. Automatic shutdown of the drive in case of electrical failure.
  2. Soft motor start when the twist grip is turned abruptly or when too
much force is applied when starting from a stand still.
  3. Activation of the motor only after the twist grip is turned beyond a
    certain angle from zero position.
  4. Automatic return to zero position when the twist grip is released.
  5. Automatic shutdown as a protection against over heating.
  6. Optional: On/Off-switch integrated into the twist grip for easy
    activation by the thumb.
  7. Automatic shutdown of the drive in case of battery under voltage.
  8. Key operated switch as a safeguard against unauthorised use.
