 Powered Assisted Handcycles - Cougar

  COUGAR Powered Assisted Handcycle

The Cougar Electric handcycle gives the user the best of both worlds, it can be operated with or without the electric assistance. It is possible to instantly switch from manual to power assist without interruption of peddle rotation.

Power assistance can be used continuously although in order to conserve battery power it is good practice to anticipate gear changes when approaching an incline and to use assistance when extra power is needed.

The Cougar electric handcycle was designed and built to make life easier and more pleasant for hand-cyclists.

No matter whether you encounter headwinds, rain or hills, with the Cougar as your backup you will always have the upper hand giving you that boost when ever you need it. Its user-friendliness and superior help function make it the No. 1 hand cycle on the market.

Range

The Cougar allows a range of action approx 12 miles on power alone. This means increased mobility with little effort. The range achieved by a single battery charge depends on various factors. These are the condition of the battery, the road conditions and particularly the cyclist's own effort.

Pack / Controller

The power module is a very sophisticated piece of equipment. The module contains the Li-ion batteries, a very clever battery monitor, a very sophisticated electronic controller with numerous safty features and a full BMS (Battery Management System.

Heinzmann power modules generally last well over 600 cycles, thats two years of daily use. The non reversable decline is generally down to the quality of the cell, the cells are generally acknowledged to be the best made, so last longer than the cheaper brands.

Controller

A pulse-width controller, controlled by the throttle on the handlebar. The throttle has an on/off switch and light, and there's a key switch on the Power Pack.

The controller also has safety features to protect you and other parts of the system: it monitors the temperature of the motor at all times, and it monitors every cell in the pack - if anything goes wrong (very rare!) it cuts out to protect you and everything else.

Cables and Connectors

To stand up to years of use in all weathers, we only use the toughest cables and connectors available.

Docking System

The Cougar power assisted cycle can be connected to most rigid wheelchairs via a docking system that is permanently mounted under the wheelchair. It is lightweight, and adds approximately one kilogram to the weight of the chair. Once connected it takes only seconds to dock on.

The rear of the docking system is bolted to either the back axle or a bar going across the back of the chair. The front is bolted to the bar underneath the front of the seat. Some chairs do not have this bar, Kuschall for example. In this case we tailor a bar to the chair, which is then bolted on using the existing holes.

Please go to the video page to view the docking on proceedure.

(Please note we can not fit our hand cycles to folding wheelchairs)
